San Martino - Rievocazione 3

Tour Description:
Garda Lake is the largest lake in Italy, and is famous for its great climate and wonderful views.
Sirmione is a small ancient city, founded by the ancient Romans over 2100 years ago.
Its territory is a peninsula of 4 km in the middle of the lake.
In the north of the peninsula, there is a beautiful ancient Roman Villa, called “Grotte (caves) di Catullo”.
The only entrance to the city from the mainland is well protected by the Scaliger Castle, built as we see it today (on a pre-existing Roman “Castrum”), in the thirteenth century.
In the afternoon we will move to San Martino della Battaglia, that along with Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere (small towns all very close to Sirmione) was the scene on 24 June 1859 of a great and famous battle between the Italian and French allied troops, against the Austrian troops.

There were 3 commanders in chief: the Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II, the French Emperor Napoleon III and the Austrian Emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph.
The Austrians were defeated and were forced to abandon the Lombardy, which was joined to the forming Kingdom of Italy.
The Swiss citizen Henry Dunant witnessed the battle and did his best to take care of the thousands of wounded soldiers (regardless of the color of their uniform), with the help of local people.
In 1864 he founded the Red Cross and was later awarded the first Nobel Prize for Peace in 1901.
In San Martino della Battaglia there is a Panoramic Tower, an historical museum, and at h. 17 (05.00 PM) is held every year the spectacular and exciting historical re-enactment of the 1859 battle, with infantry, cavalry and artillery.
